Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 7:00 PM - Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 9:30 PM (EST)
Somerville, United States
In this class, students will learn how to build their own coffee or end tables using a wooden top and a sheet metal base. Students will alternate between the wood shops and metal shops, learning wood joinery, sanding, finishing and staining techniques, along with metal shearing, fitting, welding, and finishing. This class is for all skill levels.
- Introduce students to wood joinery.
- Learn about wood finishing and finish selection.
- Learn about basic MIG welding
- Learn about basic sheared sheet metal fabrication.
- Learn about finishing steel with wax.
None: the class is appropriate for a range of skill levels.
All tools will be provided. Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, gloves, welding masks, jackets, dust masks, etc) are available in the metalworking and woodworking shops at the Artisan’s Asylum.
It is highly recommended to bring your own gloves for welding or brazing, as the selection in the shop can be limited and glove preferences vary wildly.
Construction materials will be available as a $125 kit of parts, purchaseable directly from the instructors on the first day of class.
Prior to attending the North Bennett Street School for carpentry, Peter Montague worked at Joe VanBenton Furniture Makers in Brookline as the chief finisher. After attending N.B.S.S. and spending some "off the grid" time in New York State, he studied timber framing in northern Maine. The last ten years have been spent working for a local finish carpentry firm where he was able to work in some of the area's most beautiful homes. He is now running his own company focusing on restoration, and managing the Artisan's Asylum woodshop. He dabbles in stained and leaded glass, custom doors, landscape structures, furniture and painting.
